WEBNov 18, 2012 · Benchmaster mill has a drawbar for holding the arbors in place without falling out. The BM spindle probably does not have provision for the tang on a No. 2 Morse taper shank. So to use one of the adapters mentioned above, a person will have to cut off the tang and drill and tap for the thread needed for the draw bar.

WEBJun 17, 2012 · All Z work is done with the knee. Though they look like a tabletop mill the knee leadscrew protrudes through the base a foot or better. They take an MT2 taper in the spindle. They come in both vertical or horizontal configurations. For the work you propose I would suggest something stouter. lg.
WEBJun 12, 2007 · I've learned that once it's in place, that weight is a big advantage. It stands solid as a mill should, not skipping about like a dancing partner. I still love my first mill, the Benchmaster, had it thirty plus years but I haven't used it since I got the 1 mill. Have fun either way and post pix either way.
WEBMay 13, 2020 · The speed will depend on the motor rpm, likely 1750 rpm or so. All you need to do is count motor turns for each turn of the spindle, turning by hand, at each pulley step. Then you divide motor speed by the resulting number and you have spindle rpm. I do not recall what it is offhand.
WEBApr 15, 2014 · You remove the horizontal and put in the vert (easier said than done.) The motor mount is hinged so it provides belt tension by gravity in vert mode. you don't use the swivel in horizontal mode (at least mine doesn't.) The giant pulley would be good to slow the cutter speed, but doesn't do much for speed changes.

Having to use the knee for Z movement is inconvenient for drilling or tapping but the spindle has maximum rigidity without a quill. The limited head room means that a lot of work has to be fastened directly to the table.

Weldon invented the helical end mill, which tends to pull out of collets under heavy use, so they came up with the straightshankwithdriveflat holder system to combat that.

The MV1 designates a vertical mill, the vertical head might have gone missing, and just the horizontal capability remains. Does the mill have power feed, manual or lever .

WEBFeb 13, 2010 · Mill Fully Converted to CNC. I currently have many tools in my shop. My favorite one is the CNC mill I built from an old 1954 Benchmaster mill. It's heavy duty and very rigid. It works excellent and I run it with Mach3. Original mill before CNC conversion. The mill is old and uses worn out ACME lead screws. This is not ideal for a CNC .

WEBJan 11, 2021 · One common modifiion that has been done to these mills is the addition of a gib lock. This is simply and additional gib screw to lock an axis. Generally the Zed doesn't need a lock. So if you find an extra threaded hole and screw impinging in the gibs this is actually common practice. Lock all but the working axis.

But as far as being more usable, about the only thing that you can't do with a horizontal that you can do with most verticals is run a tapping head.
